Apeel Sciences, a company spun out of the University of California at Santa Barbara’s world-renowned Material Science department, provides a proprietary solution created from natural plant extracts to treat fruits and vegetables, dramatically increasing the shelf life of produce and reducing the energy costs of cold storage.
The chemistry behind the barrier prevents the two main causes of spoilage: water loss and oxidation, which can account for 20% of a farmer's crop to be lost, even with refrigeration. Apeel Sciences has received a grant from the Gates Foundation.
"Apeel Sciences creates products from natural plant extracts that allow growers to reduce reliance on pesticides, increase produce quality and crop yield, and provide superior shelf life without refrigeration. Imagine a micro-thin, invisible peel that acts as a "bio-shell," shielding produce from mold, preventing bruising, and reducing oxidation and water loss. EdipeelTM protects food surfaces from the environment, helping to prevent water loss and oxidation, keeping your produce fresh."
Allergease introduced the cold and allergy consumer product industry’s first allergy lozenge in 2013. The natural herbal supplement is available for sale in most major pharmacy chains such as CVS and Walgreens.
"How did we do it? Well, the individual ingredients used in AllergEase have actually been known to help allergy sufferers for centuries. We blended four herbal extracts, added a touch of menthol and just the right amount of soothing, organic honey, and topped it all off with a full daily dose of Vitamin C. The result is an all-natural lozenge that is ready to start working, as soon as you pop it into your mouth."
